 5th May 2002      Tonbridge  V Old Timers

A very cold and windy day at Ton bridge but with 1 win under their belt the team was very optimistic. We had a total of 25 hits. Norman (3B), Norman (2b), Mike (2b), and singles from John T (2), Mike (3), Norman (1), George (3), Tony (3), Ray (1), Peter (3), Goff (2), Andy (1), and Phil (3). Pitchers today were George, Tony and John T. with 7 strikeouts between them.

I would like to welcome a new player to the squad Andy Marchant. Andy helped out the team last year and was invited along to our annual dinner. He enjoyed himself so much that he decided he wanted to be an Old Timer so we let him in!

12th May 2002    Burgess Hill   V  Old Timers

Burgess Hill was unable to get their ground so the venue was changed to Enfield. Terry was rather concerned about player numbers as we had several players on holiday. I had sent an Email to Jonathan Gould at Channel 5 asking him if he could mention on his programme that the Old Timers were looking for players. He did and as a result we gained Adrian. Adrian had played baseball many years ago for the Sutton Braves and felt he would like to take up baseball again. Along he came and was able to take part.

George started off pitching ably assisted later by Tony. There were 7 strikeouts between them. We had 10 hits in the game Tony had a (2b), George (2b), singles from Norman (1), Tony (3), George (1), Andy (2), Colin (1). There were 9 stolen bases and 8 RBI’s.

As it was Burgess Hill’s home game they should have brought along an umpire but none available. However Jimmy Worts volunteered and umpired from behind the pitcher for the 7 innings. Did a good job. Thank You Jimmy. Must mention one of the Havering Cardinals came along with Andy and played for the Burgess Hill. Did a good job had 2 good hits for them well done Wayne.

Final Score Burgess Hill 12    Old Timers 11

Sunday 28.07.02   Old Timers  V  Havering Cardinals

Instead of the scheduled game against the Bengals Andy asked could we play his Cardinals as they hopefully are in the playoffs. Andy George and occasionally Peter have been coaching these lads who ages range from 13-15 and they  have done extremely well this year. Their motto is “if they can beat the Old Timers they can beat anyone”. Tim started the pitching and we went into action. Single hits came from Mike(1),Norman(2),Tony(1) and Ray(1). Additional pitching help from Tony and George. However the opposition were on form and things were not going too well for the OT’s. The boys were hitting the ball and moving like lightning between the bases. WE DIDN’T DO SO GOOD, THEY BEAT US. They played very well and deserved to win. Think the heat got to our players. Must admit it was very hot and uncomfortable. Good luck to the lads and we wish them all the best in their next games. We are all rooting for them they deserve to win the championships. George and Andy both worked very hard with them and the boys have responded. Umpires today John Dornin behind the plate Goff 3rd base and Graham 1st base .Thank you all very much.

Final Score   Old Timers  8   Havering Cardinals  24

Havering Cardinals V Old Timers - Saturday 10 August 2002

Chaos on the M25 today as a result of a Transporter vehicle shed its load of Range Rovers and closed the road north & south. Pete & I were very fortunate although we had to wait to go through the tunnel with Ray’s expert guidance over the phone we reached Romford via the back route.

We were short of players, but George had asked Steve along and we borrowed two lads and a dad. We offer them our thanks for saving the day.  George pitched the whole nine innings – no other pitcher and there were 9 strike outs. We had seven hits, including 2 base hits from George, Steve & Ray. Singles from Mike, Steve and Ray managed another two singles.

Colin arrived after a horrendous journey and took the place of one of the lads. We did manage two double plays in the game the first being between Ray-Mike –Peter and the next between George and Peter Barrett.

Final Score Havering Cardinals 4 – Old Timers 10

Old Timers Memorial Tournament – Monday 26 August 2002

At the Annual Old Timers memorial Tournament we invited three other teams to compete with us, Burgess Hill, Herts Falcons & Havering Cardinals and Bengals. Gill Lyle, Hilary and Gill’s friend and daughter set up the barbecue and started to cook. Jane went round persuading people to buy raffle tickets and Jim acted as the security guard watching the wonderful prizes.

---------------

With 13 players we were feeling hopeful as we started our first game against Burgess Hill. The game proved to be a good match up. George pitched and the hits included 2 base hits from John Thomas & Tony singles from Mike, Norman, George and Peter and a stolen base from Tim when he scored a run.

Final Score: Old Timers 7 – Burgess Hill 8

 ---------------

Next game was the Old Timers v Havering. Tim & Tony pitched the game and there was a total of 5 hits, 2 base from Norman and singles from John Thomas, Tim and 2 singles from Stewart. John managed to steal 3 bases and Stewart one, and there was a double play between Norman & Phil.

Final Score: Old Timers 7 – Havering 4

---------------

It was a very enjoyable day with members not only playing but managing to socialise as well. A big thank you to everyone who made the day go so well, especially to those who helped with the barbecue & raffle as the proceeds raised for the club were excellent.

We held a minute silence for those Old Timers sadly no longer with us, and remembered Richard who passed away this year, another sad loss for the team.

 Final Positions for the day

1st  Burgess Hill

2nd  Herts Falcons
